Oral Medicine and Radiology, is a branch of dentistry that deals with diagnosis and medical management of diseases affecting oral and maxillofacial structures and it also trains the undergraduate students in the diagnosis of oral diseases.
It deals with clinical diagnosis of diseases which include a wide range of pathologies such as caries, periodontal diseases, trauma, Salivary gland disorders, Temperomandibular disorders, cysts & tumors, orofacial pain & neuralgias, developmental disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, metabolic disorders, and neurological disorders affecting the structure and function of oral cavity.
. It deals with early detection of precancerous lesions & conditions (potentially malignant disorders), oral cancer and also serves to counsel patients regarding lifestyle habits, tobacco and other addictive habits. It plays an important role in identification of oral manifestations of systemic diseases and aims at interdisciplinary care of patients and dental management of medically compromised patients.
Oral Radiology involves the study of science of radiations, especially X-rays and application of different techniques of image acquisition necessary for diagnosis of oro-facial disorders. It trains the students in learning and applying the principles of image acquisition, interpretation of diagnostic images and radiation safety. Training in radiographic techniques such as panoramic radiography, skull radiography, cephalometric analysis, occlusal radiography, intraoral radiography, sialography and basics of advanced imaging techniques like CT, MRI and Ultrasound. The scope also extends into the field of forensic sciences.
